Food Hygiene Law - new law applied in the UK as of 1st January 2006

New food hygiene laws were introduced and applied in the United Kingdom on the 1 January 2006. These new laws and regulations affect all food businesses, including Manufacturers, Caterers, Distributors, Primary Producers and Retailers.

Does the business need to be registered?

All food businesses will need to register their place of work, (premises), with their local authority.

Food business owners and proprietors should directly approach the relevant local authority, where your premises will be situated, before they open and strat trading.

What training will my staff need?

All food handlers must recieve adequate training in food hygiene. This will enable them to handle the food safely. Many employers use online training to satisfy this peice of legislation which allows their staff to gain a Food Hygiene Certificate. This is now known as a Food Safety Certificate under the new legislation. Food Handlers should be trained to the Level 2 Standard.

Those who are responsible for developing, maintaining and updating the company's Food Safety Procedures must have recieved adequate training. The company should have a fully maintained and up to date HACCP Plan. This should once again be maintained by somebody who has recieved adequate training in the HACCP Principles. The most common source of this training is online with a specialist provider. HACCP Level 3 Training is the most desirable level of training for Managers or Supervisors who will be undertaking these tasks.
